Knight Optical’s Dispersive Prisms for Spectrometers

11 May 2018

An optical spectrometer uses Dispersive Prisms to split the lightwave into the different colours(wavelengths). As the light passes through the dispersive prism, the light is refracted, and it’s angle is determined through the refractive index of the prism’s material which is slightly dependent on the wavelength of the light travelling through it. .

Dispersive Prisms are used in spectrometers because of the breakdown of the light into its composite wavelengths. This would then aid the determination of the refractive index of a material, or the transmission of a filter, for example.

Depending on your requirements and application, there are many different types of prisms available. Some of these can be coated with AR coatings or Mirror coatings to improve transmission or reflection.

Knight Optical’s dispersive Prisms are available from stock or custom. Some of Knight Optical’s custom capabilities are:

  • General Dimensions: 5mm to 300mm+
  • Angular Tolerance: <3arcseconds
  • Surface form: <1/10th was @ 633nm
  • Surface quality: <10:5

All our prisms are fully inspected on their quality in our ISO 9001:2015 certified, state-of-the-art Metrology laboratory, using our TriOptics PrismMaster for angle accuracy of +/- 3 arcseconds and our Starrett AV300 Video Imaging Device . This allows us to work to the highest QA standards and meet the tolerance specifications on these precision components.
