AMTIR Lenses for Infra-Red Imaging Systems

Date Announced: 08 Mar 2017

Knight Optical now offers Lenses for Infra-red systems. We supply AMTIR lenses for NIR (0.9

to 1.5µm), MWIR (3 to 5µm), and LWIR (8 to 12µm) Imaging Systems.

AMTIR has a good transmission in the MWIR band, and can be used with Silicon or Germanium to form well corrected doublets and lens systems.

These systems include Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) systems. AMTIR has a high dispersion value, 113, that allows the use of this glass for pairing in the LWIR waveband with Zinc Sulfide.

This pairing will allow for the design and manufacture of a colour corrected lens. The refractive index range with temperature of AMTIR allows the design of optical systems that could avoid thermal defocussing in the MWIR and LWIR wavebands.

AMTIR can be diamond turned permitting better and lighter NIR, MWIR and LWIR systems to be built. The surfaces that can be diamond turned include, spherical, aspherical, and cylindrical. Night vision goggles benefit from the use of AMTIR glass by helping them to be lighter, have fewer optical elements, cheaper, and higher resolution as the image intensifier tubes improve in quality.

Other alternative methods of diamond machining that we offer is diamond fly cutting which is used to generate diffraction gratings and also diamond milling, which can be used to generate aspheric lens arrays.

Typical materials that we can diamond turn for military based diamond turned aspheric lenses are:

Germanium (Ge) , Calcium Fluoride (CaF2 ), Zinc Sulphide (ZnS), Zinc Selenide (ZnSe), Aluminium (Al), and other chalcogenide glasses like AMTIR.
