Date Announced: 04 Jun 2014
4th June 2014, Southampton, UK, SPI Lasers, a leading designer and manufacturer of fiber lasers, announces an organizational and product group simplification. Following its most successful trading year to date, these changes will be implemented in time for the new SPI financial year on July 1st.
At product level, SPI will be reducing from three business units (Pulsed Lasers, Medium-Power Lasers, kW Lasers) down to two by combining the medium power and kW activity under one business unit (CW Lasers). As the target customers and applications for rack-mounted medium-power lasers and kW OEM lasers are evolving towards a common end-user base, within the new CW Lasers business unit, both product management and NPI development will be organized accordingly.
The re-organization will also allow a 25% reduction in the Senior Management Team reporting to Dr. Christian Schmitz. Alongside this, SPI will be enacting a limited redundancy program as the business activities are combined and other efficiencies are realized.
SPI closes its financial year FY13-14 with its strongest ever sales and profit position. The SPI pulsed lasers business (marking and micro machining) has a world-class portfolio and a strong development funnel. The kW OEM and medium power business, also having its strongest ever year, will benefit greatly from the improved focus as well as the new design ideas of Dr. Schmitz and full investment support of the TRUMPF Group.
Dr. Schmitz, CEO SPI Lasers commented “whilst it is unfortunate to lose good people from our organization in this way, the re focus and organizational restructuring will strengthen our ability to invest in the long term”. SPI’s role in the laser community is to develop and sell class leading laser modules that enable the maximum value-add for our global machine integrator customer base”.
