Kepler PI William Borucki
William Borucki, the first principal investigator for the Kepler mission. Borucki, who also worked on the Apollo mission, led the experimental efforts that proved both front and back-illuminated CCD sensors would provide the necessary precision required to find Earth-sized exoplanets. Before retiring in 2015, he also built a $1M end-to-end simulation of the technology needed to accomplish the detection of Earth-sized transits. Photo: NASA Ames.
