| Under the microscope in this image is the record-breaking 17.3% CdTe cell produced by First Solar and certified by NREL. The development represents a significant improvement on the previous best of 16.7%, set in 2001, and crucially First Solar says that it was manufactured using only full-scale tools and processes and commercial materials - unlike many so-called "hero" solar cells.
