'World's brightest LED' debuts in US

17 Jun 2002

US lamp maker LumiLeds brings the brightest LED and the first side-emitting LED to the market.

LumiLeds, US, has released what it claims is the world's brightest LED. Providing an output of up to 120 lumens from a single white-emitter package, the Luxeon 5 Watt LED will target the solid-state lighting market.

This newest member of the Luxeon family is said to deliver up to 60 times the output of competitive devices and four times the luminous flux previously available from a single Luxeon LED.

Green, cyan, blue and royal blue Luxeon 5 Watt packages are also said to emit record-breaking luminousity ranging from 30 lumens in the blue to 120 lumens for green and cyan.

In July, LumiLeds will also launch what it claims is the market's first high-power LEDs with an off-axis radiation pattern. Each side-emitting Luxeon lamp directs the light beam at 90 degrees off the optical axis producing light in a toroidal pattern. Luxeon 1 Watt and 5 Watt modules that deliver 20 and 120 lumens of light will be available.

As well as a significant rise in the output of these devices, consumers will benefit from a lower cost per lumen. According to LumiLeds, the white Luxeon 5 Watt produces roughly four times the brightness for three times the price of the Luxeon 1 Watt.

A non-epoxy technique for encapulation also enhances the color uniformity and maintains the brightness. LumiLeds predicts that its Luxeon LEDs will retain upwards of 90% of their light output after 9000 hours and 70% through 50 000 hours.
