Kodak brings active-matrix OLED displays another step closer to the market.

Eastman Kodak has become the first company to release an evaluation kit for an active-matrix display based on organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs).

The kit, designed for original equipment manufacturers and selling at USD 5200, includes a 2.16 inch diagonal display panel (AM550L), an interface board, software drivers, cables and instructions.

The display is aimed at handheld TV and camcorder applications and will be shown for the first time today at the Society for Information Display (SID) conference in Boston.

The displays will be produced initially on 300 x 400 mm glass substrates but in early 2003 the USD 350 million joint investment with Sanyo in a full-scale plant will come on stream, producing 550 x 670 mm glass.

Kodak believes it still has an 18 to 24 month lead over rival polymer OLED contenders, according to Leslie Polgar, president of Display Products at the company.

Polgar told Optics.Org that lifetimes for red and green pixels were now 40 000 h, 20 000 h for white and 10 000 h for blue. Brightness of the device is more than 300 cd/m2.
