LASER 2003: Monday

24 Jun 2003

Delegates hear news of a fiber laser with a record output power of 600 W.

Within an hour of the doors opening at this year’s LASER show, delegates heard the news that SPI (Southampton Photonics) claims to have demonstrated a fiber laser with an output of 600W. The company believes this is the highest power reported to date with a single fiber gain module.

“We believe today that we are publishing, for the first time, news of 600W from a singlemode fiber,” said David Parker SPI’s CEO.

SPI’s ytterbium-doped fiber laser emits approximately 610 W at 1090 nm at a pump power of 1000W. The company will present full details to delegates later in the week.

The next milestone in SPI’s sights is a fiber laser with an output power in excess of 1kW. “We want to get at least 1 kW singlemode within the next 12 months,” said Parker. He added that customers are eagerly waiting for the 1 kW product, and that future power-scaling will be fuelled by demand.

SPI’s success does not end there. The company is also exhibiting the first products from its redPower range. This includes a series of modulatable CW products to 30W; a short-pulsed product family with peak powers starting at 25 kW and energies in excess of 1 mJ; and a 100W modulatable CW unit.

The company says its redPower product series offers the highest short-pulse energy available from a fiber laser. Samples of these products are available and orders are being taken for production in quarter three of 2003.
