SPIE Photonics Europe 2010

28 May 2009

Leading photonics researchers and industry developers will present up-to-the-minute research and the latest technology innovations at SPIE Photonics Europe in Brussels, 12–16 April 2010. The event will be held at the Square Conference Centre, and is the fourth in a series that began in 2004.

"Participants will have the opportunity to gain support for new ideas, learn about new developments in photonics that will enable future design successes, and network with peers and future R&D team members," said Francis Berghmans, professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB).

Berghmans, Ronan Burgess, scientific officer in the European Commission’s Photonics Unit, Jürgen Popp, co-ordinator of the Photonics4Life Network of Excellence, and Peter Hartmann, Schott AG, are symposium chairs.

Photonics Europe will include a high-quality scientific technical programme of conferences and hot-topic plenary sessions, a showcase for innovation, student and entrepreneurship events, courses and workshops, and an exhibition featuring an expected 150 companies showing the latest photonics components, tools and systems. SPIE anticipates overall attendance of around 2500.

Abstracts will be accepted 15 June – 28 September, for papers in:

  • micro/nano technologies: metamaterials, photonic crystal fibres and devices, MEMS, MOEMS, nanometrology
  • optics and photonics: sensors, silicon photonics, organic photonics
  • laser technology: semiconductors, solid state, fibre lasers, amplifiers
  • applications: solar, biophotonics, automotive, image processing, multimedia.

The Photonics Innovation Village will again be presented, jointly organized in 2010 by VUB’s Department of Applied Physics and Photonics (TONA) and School of Business Engineering and by SPIE Europe, under the patronage of the European Commission. "We are excited to see Photonics Europe becoming the highlight of the European photonics calendar and the forum where European projects can share their achievements with the broader community," Burgess said.

"Photonics Europe aims to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial development," said Hugo Thienpont of VUB, one of three symposium chairs in 2008. "Our goal is to create a forum par excellence where researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs and industrial leaders can network, interact and join forces to work towards a better society for all, based on the technology of light."

Conference proceedings manuscripts will be published online in the SPIE Digital Library (SPIEDigitalLibrary.org) as soon as approved following the conference. The library contains more than 277,000 articles on optics and photonics research, with approximately 18,000 new journal and proceedings articles added each year.
