A Silicon Valley start-up supplies fibre-based laser sources for materials processing, medical therapy and other commercial applications.
What is Mobius Photonics' core technology, and what makes it commercial?
"Mobius Photonics delivers rugged and reliable fibre-based laser sources to the commercial market," Laura Smoliar, chairman and chief executive officer, told optics.org. "The founding team brings together core competencies in high-power fibre amplifiers, frequency conversion, and commercial lasers."
"Mobius products are differentiated by a unique combination of characteristics enabling new processes with higher throughput and yield. Key features include: 10 W UV (355 nm) at 300 kHz (or 18 W green, or 30 W infrared) with the ability to reach 1 MHz pulse repetition rate, independent control of pulse width and repetition rate, variable pulse widths from 2 to 100 ns, pulse temporal shape control, and extremely low pulse-to-pulse jitter."
What products does Mobius sell?
"Current products feature both fundamental (IR) and harmonically wavelength converted (green and UV) outputs," said Smoliar. "These products are based on a pulsed master-oscillator, fibre-power-amplifier (MOFPA) architecture. An all-fibre amplifier design eliminates the complexity and performance limitations of bulk amplifiers or Q-switched lasers. Diffraction-limited operation is possible over a wide range of user adjustable pulse repetition frequencies, pulse widths, and duty cycles."
What application areas does Mobius target?
"Mobius Photonics products target commercial applications that require the reliability and serviceability of 24/7 circuit fabrication operations. These applications include wafer singulation, material processing, semiconductor inspection and repair, via drilling, and medical therapy."
What were the origins of the company?
Mobius Photonics was incorporated in 2005. Prior to forming Mobius, the five company founders worked together at Lightwave Electronics. "In 2005, JDS Uniphase acquired Lightwave, but the founding team chose to stay together and form a new company to pursue fibre amplifier technology with the encouragement of key customers and seed investors, who had been Lightwave founders," explained Smoliar. Robert Mortensen, the founding CEO of Lightwave, is on the Mobius board of directors. Mobius is located in the heart of Silicon Valley.
