Instrument Systems GmbH

Instrument Systems GmbH, founded in Munich in 1986, develops, manufactures and markets all-in-one solutions for light measurement applications. Its core products are array spectrometers and imaging colorimeters. The company’s main fields of activity are LED/SSL and display metrology, spectral radiometry and photometry, as well as laser/VCSEL characterization where today Instrument Systems is one of the world’s leading manufacturers. The Optronik line of products for the automotive industry and traffic technology is developed and marketed at its Berlin facility. Instrument Systems has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Konica MinoIta Group since 2012.

Instrument Systems fosters innovative product ideas with the development of high-level light measurement technology. Our measuring solutions are indispensable for the producers of consumer electronics, displays, VCSEL/laser-based systems, exterior automotive lighting and LED/SSL modules. For many years, we have been actively involved in standardization organizations such as DIN and CIE, and we cooperate with the leading metrology institutes. As a subsidiary of Konica Minolta, our Munich headquarters and Berlin branch office have a strong global network at their disposal.

Precise and accurate measurement results from UV to IR

All our light measurement solutions benefit from our high-precision CAS series of spectroradiometers, widely recognized and in use worldwide. Because all radiometric, photometric and colorimetric properties can be calculated by software from the spectral data, the quality and precision of the spectroradiometer is extremely important. This is a core competency of Instrument Systems. In combination with 2D imaging cameras, integrating spheres and goniometer systems, highly precise and accurate measurements from UV to IR can be performed with traceable results to PTB.

Quality control for AR/VR devices

To ensure a perfect user experience, extensive and highly accurate optical tests are necessary, not only for the virtual display, but also for all other light sources and sensors of AR/VR devices. Instrument Systems has optimized its well-known LumiTop 2D imaging colorimeter for the production testing of AR/VR near-eye displays (NEDs). Simultaneous measurement of a 2D image, spectrum and flicker makes LumiTop an extremely fast, comprehensive and highly accurate imaging light measurement device. For testing the IR sources (NIR LED, VCSEL), often used for gesture and object recognition, we offer exceptional solutions such as the pulsed VCSEL tester PVT and VTC IR cameras for near- and far-field analysis.

Test systems in display production lines

For advanced vision applications, Instrument Systems has developed the LumiTop series of spectrally optimized luminance and color measurement cameras. The camera systems record high-precision 2-D measurements of display modules at production speed and permit the testing e.g. of homogeneity, mura effects, white balance, color gamut, contrast ratio, flicker and pixel defect detection. Image processing is provided by the powerful LumiSuite software with a high degree of flexibility for a wide range of display measurement tasks.

Efficient and safe characterization of VCSELs and lasers

Since a clearly defined error budget of the measurement system is required, in particular for eye safety assessment in the measurement of lasers / VCSELs, Instrument Systems offers absolutely calibrated measuring instruments with traceability to the PTB. Customized systems enable inspection of the temporal, electrical, spectral and spatial properties of laser diodes and VCSELs in production, as well as in the laboratory. The pulsed VCSEL tester PVT 100/110 is a testing solution for the control and measurement of nanosecond pulses as used for LiDAR or time-of-flight applications. It offers a high spectral resolution (≥ 0.12 nm) and extremely short pulse sequences up to 1 ns. With the VTC IR cameras, 2D arrays and single emitters can be characterized in the near- and far-field. This enables the full performance efficiency of the VCSELs to be exploited while assuring safe operation.
